Anarchy: Ultimate Truth or Fantasy?
I write this article as a philosophical discussion, inspired by a very, very smart fellow blogger who has been quite influenctial to me. His name, as I know him, is Black Flag. BF is very consistent, he has few, if any, contradictions in his arguments. He is a believer in freedom as the highest good. He believes in the rights of man as natural, not issued by government or by other men. We agree on many things, but not all. He is an anarchist.
No, not the violent, pro-chaos type of anarchist that you see in movies and hear about in punk rock songs. This is a reasoned and very compelling sort of anarchy. It is, in fact, the ultimate goal of perfect freedom. The big question I usually have is not whether that sort of self-governed anarchy would be good, but whether it is possible. Why do people hate Glenn Beck?
Seriously, I want to know.
I have been listening to Glenn on and off for about 10 years or so I think, and I have listened to him gradually change from conservative with repulican loyalties to a borderline, if not full, libertarian. His thinking process, while it changed slower, was very similar to my own, with the exception that his personal faith and family have made his thinking a little different. It was interesting to listen to that process and hear it develop, thinking all the time that he was almost there, since he is about 3-4 years behind my own philosophical transition.

Libertarian Conservatives, Part 3
Rule number 1, military for defense only. Rule number 2, first learn rule number 1. The libertarian stance on the military is a bit more reserved than the average conservative stance. This does not mean that libertarians are anti-military or that we are even anti-war, but we do believe that war is a last resort, used only for defense. We tend not to believe in the draft, and we do not buy into police actions, nation building, or “spreading democracy” through military intervention. Freedom is something that people have to get for themselves, it is not a gift to be handed out to those who are not ready.
That said, there are a few arenas of agreement that most libertarians have with the conservative military position. Read the rest of this entry »
Libertarian Conservatives, Part 1
In recent years, especially the last 2 or 3, many conservatives have been looking seriously at third parties, especially the Libertarian Party as a new home for their vote. For the most part, their former party was the Republican Party, but the actions of the Republicans have been increasingly indistinguishable from the opposing party, with some actions even more atrocious in their invasion of individual liberties and cost to the taxpayers. This trend has even lead to some comments that the LP is being taken over by Republicans, or that libertarians are just anti-war republicans, etc. While this is not the case, I do welcome the huge influx of former, or reformed, republicans. I am, in fact, one of them myself, only my transition was about 10 years ago. Read the rest of this entry »
Libertarians are Crazy Extremists!
Or at least, that is the perception many people have. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about political affiliation, and he kept stating his positions and they were all libertarian positions, or at least compatible with libertarian stances. But, he kept wanting to not associate with the LP. He finally said,”Jon, the libertarian candidates are all crazy. Their platform is great, but when they start talking everyone gets scared off.”
Well, to some extent that is true. And there are 3 main reasons for it: Read the rest of this entry »
