I also considered titling this Swine Fear. Basically, I firmly believe that scare tactics are being used to inflate the swine flu situation into a perceived pandemic. I think the media tends to exaggerate medical crises in general, as sensational news makes for greater ratings, but this seems to be a step further. The medical community, under the direction of the CDC is partaking in the overstatement of the issue. Certainly the swine flu is dangerous, but many of those to whom it has proved deadly might have succumbed to a regular flu as well. Furthermore, the distribution of medicines and some of the statements about the vaccines are especially troubling.

In light of Mr. Reich’s speech, I thought it might be nice to start a series in similar fashion. I will do an “entirely made up and off the cuff” statement of what an honest presidential candidate could and should say. The difference is, this is more what a libertarian candidate would say, instead of a liberal one. So Robert Reich, of the presidential economic advisory board, did a little letcure in 2007 that has just surfaced in teh news in which he gave a speech concerning health care as if he were an “honest” president or presidential candidate. There are a number of disturbing things about this speech, not the least of which is the very concept that he felt he should restate the health care concept in an “honest” way, implying our current president is not being honest. It is as though it is expected that “being political” is an acceptable excuse for lying.

I suppose I am not surprised. The Nobel Peace Prize has long ago lost its credibility with me. With winners like Al Gore and Jimmy Carter, whose actually accomplishments are questionable, and with winners like Roosevelt and Wilson, who are political progressives instrumental in taking America heavily in a socialist direction, I long since accepted that the Peace Prize was a political ploy only these days. I don’t think that is what Alfred Nobel originally intended, but here we are.

One of the many things disenfranchising voters is the existence of out-dated, unconstitutional, or simply foolish legislation. The process for overturning such law is rarely undertaken, and seems rather inefficient, or, at least, the motivation for such action is non-existent except in cases where old legislation is in blatant violation of civil rights or other key issues, such as slavery laws or laws pertaining to women’s rights.
