Listen Up, This is Your Boss Speaking
A lot of fuss is being made out there about people getting obnoxious in their attempts to be heard on Health Care and other issues. There have been a lot of people getting very loud and sounding very frustrated. Some of the actions and verbage have even been reported or viewed as threatening. The thing is, while there are certainly some very heated emotions in this debate, What has to be understood is that a little yelling is understandable at this point.
Our representatives have reacted in a variety of ways. Certainly, I appreciate the Town Hall meetings, it has been a venue where people can come and hopefully be heard. The fact that such meetings are happening at all is a good step on the part of the representatives. However, when they faced opposition, some representatives have reacted by not listening but merely speaking, saying their piece and leaving. Some have even left without speaking, claiming they felt threatened or too frustrated. Some have skirted doing Toan Halls at all to avoid the confrontation. There are rumors of supporters of health care even being violent towards opposers of health care. Here is what I would ask our representatives:
Have you ever had a normal job with a boss and a regular paycheck? For those who answer no, I would submit thay they are lousy representatives because they have not even experienced a way of life thatnearly every American does at some point. Most, however, would truthfully answer yes. It may have been some time since, but most had such a job in their youth, at least. The next question, then, would be:
Did you ever make a mistake and get yelled at by your boss? Most, I suspect, would again answer yes, we all make mistakes, and we all have to get reprimanded when we do if we are caught. So then, the question would be:
Did you consider your boss to be “threatening” you? He may have threatened your employment, but him or her yelling at you is hardly a threat that secret service would be called in for. It certainly would not justify avoiding him or not showing up to work for fear of your life. No, when you are going to get yelled at by your boss, and you fail to show up to the meeting, you get fired or yelled at worse. That is what is happening now.
The reason things are so heated, is that our representatives, the ones we selected to do a job for us and that we pay to do that job, are avoiding us. We are their bosses, and we are frustrated that our employees are making major errors that are hurting us and our business. They are hurting the massive business that is the American Economy. They are making errors and they are not listening to us. They are even trying to lock us out of our own building and our own bank accounts. We, the bosses, are very frustrated with this. We would like to fire those bad employees, but we know that there is a process. Most of us recognize that we have not really tried to communicate properly with our employees, so we have to write them up properly and go through the proper warning process before firing them. In fact, if they would change their ways and correct their errors, we would be happy to keep them on as employees.
But when you avoid the boss to avoid the write up, he just gets angrier. This is not going to go away just because your close your eyes and ears Mr or Mrs Representative. Buck up and take your lumps. Listen to your bosses. We have a very clear message we are trying to send. And if you do not listen, you will be fired. That is not a threat to anything but that which we have a right to threaten: Your job.
Very good points. I believe the problem, though, lay in the fact that our employees (Congress) seem to forget who exactly their boss is (us).
Indeed, it is time we send a reminder. I would love to see a record voter turnout that votes against nearly all encumbents. I suppose exceptions would have to be made to avoid putting in even worse dirtballs just to make a point, but a turnover of even as little as double the normal rate would be a strong message to send. It is either that or stop paying them, but that is a little more tricky for us bosses to get away with.
